There is something about a small wedding that allows you to experience the day differently.

Without a packed timeline or hundreds of guests pulling you in different directions, there is room to slow down. To actually talk to the people you invited. To notice the little things happening around you. To be present with each other.

Mike and Alyssa's intimate wedding at Drumore Estate in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania was such a beautiful reminder of why I love photographing micro weddings.

As a wedding photographer, I've always been drawn to the moments that happen in between the expected ones. The glance across the room. Someone reaching for your hand. Your parents watching quietly from the side. The laughter that happens when nobody realizes they're being photographed.

And smaller weddings seem to create even more space for those moments.

A Micro Wedding at Drumore Estate

Drumore Estate is a historic private estate in Pequea, just outside Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The property combines a historic Georgian mansion with formal gardens, fountains, patios, mature trees and sweeping grounds, giving couples both indoor and outdoor options for their wedding day.

What I especially love about Drumore Estate for an intimate wedding is that the property doesn't suddenly feel too large just because your guest list is small. There are little pockets throughout the estate that lend themselves beautifully to a more intimate celebration. You can move through the property rather than spending the entire day in one large reception space, and photographically, that gives us so much variety without having to leave the venue.

Drumore also specifically accommodates small weddings and elopements, with options designed around more intimate guest counts. For couples who want the beauty and experience of a traditional wedding without necessarily wanting a traditional big wedding, I think that combination is pretty special.

Why I Love Photographing Micro Weddings

The older I get and the longer I photograph weddings, the more I appreciate celebrations that feel intentional rather than performative. After more than 14 years as a wedding photographer, I don't think the size of a wedding has much to do with how meaningful it feels. Some of the most emotional photographs happen during the smallest celebrations.With fewer people and fewer moving parts, I can spend more time observing rather than constantly racing toward the next thing on a timeline. I can pay attention to relationships and personalities and all of those tiny interactions that eventually become some of the most important photographs in the gallery.

That's really what documentary wedding photography means to me.

It's not about refusing to pose anyone or standing silently in a corner all day. It's about knowing when something needs direction and, maybe more importantly, knowing when to leave a moment alone. I want you to have beautiful portraits. But I also want photographs of things you didn't even know happened.

That's especially important at a micro wedding because the intimacy is the whole point.

You shouldn't have to disappear from your celebration for an hour just to create beautiful photographs.

I think sometimes couples start planning a wedding and feel like there is a list of things they're supposed to do.

A certain number of guests.

A huge wedding party.

Eight or ten hours of coverage.

A packed reception.

But your wedding doesn't become more meaningful because more people witnessed it.

A micro wedding gives you permission to strip away some of that expectation and ask a much better question:

What would make this day actually feel like us?

Maybe that's twenty of your favorite people having dinner together.

Maybe it's getting ready slowly in the morning instead of beginning the day at 7 a.m.

Maybe it's spending more of your budget on incredible food, flowers, fashion or photography rather than hosting another hundred people.

Or maybe you simply don't want a huge wedding.

That's enough of a reason.
